In the production era of the R850 R1100 R1150 and R1200C motorcycles, the pre-installed tensioner: piston + external spring. The disadvantage of this solution was the audible "clatter" after starting the engine.
The cases of the tensioner falling into resonance and jerking the chain were a much bigger problem - this phenomenon usually appeared during constant driving with revolutions of 4000-4500. As a result of the rustling, the plastic tension rail cracked, the starter chain rubbed against the block and as a consequence, seriously damaged the engine.
To prevent this from happening, BMW has developed a new tensioner with an internal spring that eliminates the above-mentioned disadvantages.
The cylinder of the newer type of tensioner has a hexagonal head with a 15 mm wrench - the old version has a hexagon of 17 mm - so you can easily check which version of the tensioner is installed in the engine.
If an older version of the tensioner is installed, we recommend replacing it with a newer, modernized version.
